With a twist of fate, we three women all conclude our names
with Bodlak. One by marriage and two by birth—one through
paternal American lineage and one according to Peruvian law granting the first maternal
last name to the child.
For the past two and a half weeks, much of our time has been
spent exclusively together: cooking, cleaning, going for strolls, reading
books, smiling, and talking. Sharing the
roles of granddaughter, daughter, mother and grandmother, we are getting to
know one another better. It’s unlikely
that there will be another generation on this genealogical branch with the same
last name, but who is to say? No one
ever thought the three of us would be Bodlaks
either.
